A memorial diamond is a high-quality, certified diamond created from cremated ashes of your loved one as a memorial to their unique life. Your diamond will keep the memories alive for generations. These diamonds are forever, and they can be an everlasting keepsake, remembrance, or heirloom to pass to future generations. (http://www.algordanza.us/)

PRODUCTION PROCESS

In our laboratory a physical-chemical analysis of the ashes is carried out. There a kind of “chemical finger print” will be prepared. This analysis is on the one hand necessary to be able to steer the subsequent physical and chemical processes, on the other hand the analysis documents the source of the memorial diamond from the original cremation ashes.

In principle one or more diamonds can be transformed from the cremation ashes of one deceased person. As basic material for the actual synthesis for one or more diamonds a quantity of 500gr ashes is needed.

The client can dispose otherwise of the remains which are not used for the transformation. If requested all the cremation ashes will be used for the synthesis. They remain in the process until they are completely exhausted

The transformation of the ashes will be carried out with utmost care and reverence. Every production step will be accurately documented.

In an unique preliminary proceeding all inorganic substances (i.e. salts, oxides, etc.) will be chemically separated from the carbon.

The actual transformation process, the conversion of graphite into a memorial diamond (both are pure carbon: one time in a hexagonal, the other time in an octagonal structure) is carried out under enormously high pressure and high temperature and requires a couple of weeks, depending on the size (weight) of the stone.

The memorial diamond is shining in white up to bluish coloring. As different human beings are, as distinct are the tints of the diamonds. The bluish tint is depending on the individual quantity of the element Boron in the carbon. Boron is therefore an evidence for the organic source of the carbon.

After the synthesis, the rough diamond is cut and polished according to the client’s request. Furthermore, the diamond can be engraved in micro scripture by means of laser inscription. Any text is possible, maximum 75 characters, i.e. name and life data of the deceased. The inscription is only readable with a magnifying glass.

Relationship between temperature and degree of thermal alteration: Chemical reactions are accelerated two fold for each 10oC rise in temperature at which bone is exposed (Von Endt and Ortner 1984).

100-600oC (212-1112 F) - alterations in bone color (attributed to alterations in the chemical composition of bone, the oxidation of organics, and thin films of carbon layers deposited on bone mineral (Bonucci and Graziani 1975; Grupe and Hummel 1991; Shipman et al. 1984)). Studies indicate that the color of bone changes progressively with increased temperature, and that the color of thermally altered bone can provide a rough index of the temperature range that bone reached as a result of exposure to heat.

300oC – 400oC (572-752 F) - Shell May delaminate, burn

600oC range (1112 F) - the organic phase is effectively burned away,

600oC – 800oC (1112-1472 F) - Bone becomes calcined

700oC and beyond (>1292 F) - recystallization of hydroxyapatite and the eventual fusion of those crystals.

Shipman et al. (1984) provide the most systematic and widely cited assessment of heat-induce color alteration of bone. The researchers observed that heat-induced color alteration can be divided into five stages:

stage 1 (20- <285oC, 68- <545 F), neutral white/pale yellow;

stage 2 (285- <525oC, 545- <977 F), red brown, very dark grey-brown, neutral dark grey, and reddish yellow; Grey is associated with the final stages of organic component combustion. Carbonized bone with a blackened or charred appearance is likely to have reached a temperature in the 250-550oC range.

stage 3 (525- <645oC, 977- <1193 F), neutral black dominant with some medium blue and reddish-yellow; Dark colors, particularly black, are related to the carbonization of collagen. At temperatures of 600oC and beyond the organic component is completely burned away resulting in calcination and a neutral white, chalky appearance.

stage 4 (645- <940oC, 1193- <1724 F), neutral white dominant with some light blue-grey and light grey;

stage 5 (940+oC, 1724+ F), neutral white with minimal medium grey and reddish-yellow.
